Do You Have A Small Business That We Can Help You Start or Grow?

Success Story: Rose Street Skateshop

After moving to San Diego from New York City, husband-and-wife Sean and Fay Kelling identified an opportunity to open a mom-and-pop skateboarding shop that was built “by skaters, for skaters.”

“I started skating in the 6th grade and I have been skating ever since in my free time,” said Sean, now 44 years old. “I wanted to turn my passion into my full-time career.”

Sean knew the skating industry very well but had never started a business. “I found the SBDC online and signed up for the Entrepreneurship Academy, and then they walked us every step of the way from there to our grand opening.”

Unfortunately, rough seas were not far ahead.

Rose Street Skateshop opened in December 2019, and within a few months they were faced with the massive impact of the global pandemic. Sean has a marketing background and they quickly pivoted to online sales. Thanks to an equal dose of creative marketing campaigns and entrepreneurial resilience, they opened up new sales channels and have rebounded far faster than originally feared.

Located in Encinitas, Rose Street Skateshop carries a curated selection of skateboarding hard goods and apparel that cannot be found anywhere else in San Diego. Stop by Sean and Fay’s shop at 204 N. El Camino Real, Encinitas, CA, 92024, or visit them on the web at www.rosestreetskateshop.com or via Instagram @rosestreetskateshop.

“Fay and I had no idea how to start a business. The SBDC instantly put us on the right track and helped us create a comprehensive business plan, and then found us good lenders for the financing we needed to open. We absolutely could not have done this without the SBDC!”
