Success Story: Game That Song

Eric Robertson is a Mira Costa College tenured professor and department chair. During his teaching experience, he was named Mira Costa’s Faculty Member of the Year as well as Most Influential Faculty Member for San Diego State University. His teaching approach over the last 15 years paved an innovative way for getting groups of people together and achieving an outcome.

In 2019, Eric decided to take this skill and apply it to game design. His first product was a card game, “Game That Song”; it launched on Kickstarter and met 300% of the initial goal. With the help of the North San Diego SBDC, Game That Song was released on Amazon in October 2019. The family-friendly, music-driven game sold over 1,200 units in 2019, generating over $24,000 in revenue, and Game that Song’s units increased to 3,000 units for 2020 – $60,000 in revenue. “I can’t believe SDBC was free,” he says. “As a one-person business, it was invaluable to have an experienced consultant discuss my plans, goals, and systems.”

Game That Song continues to grow each month as more and more people play the game. The professor’s latest game, “Name That Puppy”, was released in October 2020 and is trending along the same path as the first. In 2021, Eric is projected to make $100,000 in sales and has been able to expand to new, international Amazon markets. “I’d highly recommend SDBC,” he shares. “As my ‘side hustle’ started to grow, I needed advice and someone experienced to help with my plans. SDBC really helped me plan so I was able to scale faster and more efficiently.”

Eric currently has five additional games in development and continues to use the profits of previous games to develop and launch new games.
