Entrepreneurship has always been part of Desmond Bui’s journey. After years in startup and corporate sales, he set out to create a business that prioritized authentic customer experiences while celebrating Vietnamese culture. That vision became Mot Banh Mi, a modern take on the traditional bánh mì built around community, creativity, and quality. With no prior restaurant or food industry experience, Desmond turned to the San Diego & Imperial SBDC’s Starting Your Food Business program for guidance.
Through training and one-on-one advising, he learned how to navigate permits, food safety requirements, mobile food operations, and event planning while building valuable industry connections. Mot Banh Mi officially launched in 2026 and quickly gained momentum, selling out at multiple pop-up events and generating $13,000 in sales within its first three months. Today, Desmond continues growing the business with the goal of building one of the most recognizable bánh mì brands in the industry.
