Success Stories: Momentum Tutoring

Theresa Bozhor is the executive director of Momentum Tutoring in Santee. She founded the business and works with board members also experienced in education. Theresa began working with her first SBDC advisor in 2018 at the East County SBDC. She notes she’s worked with three advisors at the SBDC and says “it’s been really awesome because you all have built up on each other.”

The entrepreneur explains how her first advisor helped her team with their business plan, setting their focus and helping them really decide what they were doing and how they were going to do it. The second advisor assisted Momentum Tutoring with its financials, guiding the leaders in making it sustainable and appealing to workers, building programs, and fundraising. Hayato Nakamura has been their third advisor, aiding them in all things branding and marketing.

“All three of you have really been like adding a team member to our staff, who has a lot of expertise and knowledge to really elevate us in the different fields,” Theresa says. One board member adds how the SBDC would really ask the right questions over and over to make the company think hard and for Theresa to verbalize that business passion herself, that it had to come from her. Theresa adds how the SBDC is willing to help in so many ways, not actually doing the work but showing business owners how. Momentum says the SBDC also has good teachers and that’s inspiring, exciting, and it lifts up small business.

“We just started really seeing this as a tool, something that could really help us with our company,” Theresa shares. “Anybody who is doubting it or not sure, I tell you to absolutely try it.” She recommends finding the advisor for you. “You guys offer a lot that really helps a business, or an owner, or anybody working in a business. It’s like a lifeline for me, I know. I felt a lot more at peace knowing I had someone to ask for help instead of feeling so out there and alone.”
